Jitin Prasada’s departure is seen as a fresh blow to the Congress after another heavyweight leader of the party Jyotiraditya Scindia had joined the BJP in March 2020

Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Thursday took a dig at former union minister Jitin Prasada, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday.

Taking to Twitter, Sibal wondered if Prasada is just a ‘catch’ for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections. “In such deals if ‘ideology’ doesn’t matter changeover is easy,” added Sibal. Notably, Prasada belongs to a political family in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, another Congress leader Shashi Tharoor also took to Twitter to ask if politics can be without principle.

“Can politics be a career devoid of principle? Politics has to be about ideas, or it’s nothing. Can a person of conviction change political parties the way a cricketer changes IPL teams?” posted Tharoor.

Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat had yesterday described Prasada’s decision to join the BJP as a “big slap on their (Congress) face”.

Senior Congress leader Rawat said, “Jitin Prasada joining BJP is like a big slap on our face. It is sad and disheartening. I am surprised that he called Congress ‘a regional party’ and joined the party against which his family fought.”

Jitin Prasada, the former MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Dharahura, joined the BJP in the presence of Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal at the party headquarters yesterday.

He switched sides ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2022. His decision to quit Congress is being seen as a big jolt to the party that was trying to revive itself in UP under the guidance of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

“I have a three-generation connection with Congress, so I took this important decision after a lot of deliberation. In the last 8-10 years, I have felt that if there is one party that is truly national, it is BJP. Other parties are regional but this is the national party,” Prasada had said.
