At Macchi Mata temple in Valsad, bone of Whale is worshipped as God; temple doesn’t have any idol
Valsad: Magod Dungri (Valsad). Faith has nothing to with belief or science and this perfectly fits at Macchi Mata temple located at Magod Dungri village in Valsad district. The temple is unique not because of its structure, but due to God worshipped in it. Devotees worship center bone of Whale offer puja.
Machhi Mata temple located at 9 kilometer from Valsad is a temple, full of surprises. Leaving Whale bone, there is not idol placed inside the temple, neither has any official Pujari. Temple is located facing sea and upon tiny hill. Devotees came to the temple and offer puja themselves. The history of temple is also very interesting.
“More than 200 years ago, our great grand father Prabhu Tandel had a dream, wherein a Whale told him that she would be lying dead at village coast. She asked Tandel to place the bone at present place, once body gets decomposed. The very next day, a Whale was lying dead on the village coast,” Vijay Tandel, grandson of Tandel, said.
According to Vijay, dead body of Whale was buried near coast for six months. When the body decayed, Tandel alone pulled the massive bone five kilometers from sea coast to present site.
The temple is very popular among local fishermen community, who offer puja daily and also before going fishing. Local villagers say that Macchi Mata fulfills all their desires and even cures diseases, once puja is offered. Instances are recorded in past, where people have to suffer dire consequences, for ignoring Machhi Mata.
“There was once epidemic in Magod Dungri and when all villagers offered puja, village was relieved from epidemic, within one week. Few years back, a group of fishermen went into sea, without offering puja and they had to face rough weather in middle of the sea. More than 50% of fishermen went missing,” Raman Tandel, a local resident, said.
A massive mela and puja ceremony is organized each year on eight day during Navratri. Thousands of people gather at temple and worship their deity. Till today, new born baby is first brought to temple and then community rituals are done.
