Amid criticism of MS Dhoni’s contributions with the bat, cricketing legend Brian Lara feels that not much should be expected from the CSK skipper as a batsman

MS Dhoni returned to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 after a disappointing outing the last time around. Though in terms of leadership and wicket-keeping, the CSK skipper hardly seems to have ‘aged’, his performances with the bat are still leaving plenty to desire.

Dhoni came out to bat at the No. 7 spot for Chennai against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match on Monday. He only scored a 17-ball 18 as CSK lost momentum in the final overs. The franchise once looked set to cross the 200-run mark but only settled for 188, primarily because of Dhoni’s slow knock.

The veteran wicket-keeper batsman himself admitted that the slow start he got off to could’ve cost CSK the match. Dhoni’s batting position and role as a batsman has since been a subject of debate.

Former Windies captain, Brian Lara, is of the opinion that not much should be expected from Dhoni as a batsman, especially considering the sort of batting line-up that CSK have.

“I don’t think there should be asking for too much effort from MS Dhoni with the bat. Of course, he got the gloves in his hands, he has got to take the catches and do the stumpings. But I find that batting order is so long, Dhoni can take some rest. We want him in form, we know how destructive he can be but he has got so many good players. Look at Sam Curran, who is in great form. He comes in and hits from ball one straightaway,” Brian Lara told Star Sports.

“I think they have got a very good team. A good leader who is inspirational. If he concentrates on that aspect of it, getting every single individual performing, they can go all the way,” Lara added.

With the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Moeen Ali and Dwayne Bravo in the middle-order, CSK have ample all-rounders to make for Dhoni’s inefficiency in the batting order. Having admitted that his slow start against RR could’ve cost CSK the match, Dhoni is expected to push himself further down in the batting order in the coming matches.
