How the brand has helped the farmers and their family
Ayush Sarda, Founder, Ek Packet Umeed and Sweetness of Ethics
In May 2020, cyclone Amphan in West Bengal and Bangladesh destroyed everything that lay ahead of its path. Apart from West Bengal, the natural disaster left a sea of destruction in the fertile Sunderbans, home to millions and uprooted their lives within hours. Most of the men in the Sunbarbans villages had lost their jobs as a result of cyclone Amphan and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The brand is a social
entrepreneurship that has been set up by Ek Packet Umeed in Kolkata. The primary objective is to provide a respectable and independent source of income to the families of Sunderbans,
West Bengal who are stuck in the vicious cycle of poverty. The Sundarban is the world’s largest mangrove forest, with small indigenous riverine islands. Sundarban honey has a liquid consistency and a distinct woody taste and flavour. Maulis (honey collectors), as they
are known in Bengali, risk their lives to collect honey during the peak season, armed only with a prayer to Bon Bibi (the Forest Goddess).
Owing to the presence of mangroves and the humid weather, the honey has a thin and liquid quality.
Honey is normally golden in colour and has a white foam that forms on it from time to time. The formation of white foam on the honey is a positive indication that it is raw, unprocessed, and unheated honey. Sweetness Of Ethics is a 100% organic honey brand. It helps you build immunity, increases metabolism & improves your digestion. It also increases antioxidant levels, controls obesity & cholesterol.
Since the climate in other places is dry, while the climate in the Sundarbans is humid and moist, the honey here is very different from the typical thick honey found in the mountains. Today, the area is known for its honey. The recently introduced Hibiscus honey is the honey infused with hibiscus flowers, famous not only for their marvelous look but also for the ability to treat various health issues. It is not
just a tasty fragrant treat – it’s literally a kind of medicine!
Hibiscus is widely known for its ability to treat various medical conditions. It helps to lower down the blood pressure along with the cholesterol level, improve the metabolism, and make an upset stomach recover faster. You get the pure raw honey straight from the farm. It is not filtered, pasteurized, or artificially flavored.
We've been working closely with farmers in the Sundarbans for the past year to bring raw honey to our audience. This in turn has led to a drastic rise in the income of the farmers over the past one year We have procured nearly 3,000 kgs of honey so far, resulting in a rise in the income of farmers from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000, per farmer. We are currently working with a group of 100 farmers. The money we earn, about 80% of it, is re-invested in the village to strengthen and boost the village’s living standards.
We have successfully founded one school for 100 children, a vocational training unit where basic skills such as agarbatti making and stitching are taught, a small medical centre, and various self-help groups with the funds raised thus far. In the next five years, we expect to adopt five more villages to assist them in achieving independence and self-sufficiency.
