Daman: Election Commission of India (Union Territory) has postponed village panchayat and district panchayat elections of Dadra & Nagar Haveli (D&NH) and Daman & Diu till further orders. Present term of village panchayats and district panchayats of D&NH and Daman & Diu is expiring in September / October 2020.

According to Election Commission of India, it took into account of COVID-19 situation in the union territory from the local administration.  Local administration informed the Election Commission that 770 cases of COVID-19 had been recorded in the union territory till July 25, 2020.

Taking into account The Supreme Court of India’s judgement on 19.10.2006, court has said that elections can be postponed for genuine supervening difficulties and exceptional conditions. This includes natural calamities, rioting and breakdown of law and order.

The Election Commission said that considering the current situation, it is difficult to conduct elections in a free, fair and transparent manner. Considering all the situations, using its powers under section Article 243K and 243ZA has postponed elections till further orders.
